Herb Remedies: Heat Stress

Heat stress occurs if physical activity during heat and humidity upsets the body’s fluid balance. When air temperature and humidity increase , than the body is less and less able to dissipate heat through perspiration. Higher temperatures also cause heat gain as the body absorbs heat from the sun. Swelling is the mildest form of heat related illness. It results from pooling of blood in the hands and feet when the blood vessels dilate in response. Heat cramps are painful spasms of the skeletal muscles in the arms, legs, or abdomen. Fainting, or heat syncope, occurs with prolonged standing or upon sudden rising from a seated or lying position. Cramps occur if too much sodium has been removed from the body by sweat, and are a warning signal of heatĀ  exhaustion. Heat exhaustion occurs if a person experiences excessive sweating in a hot, humid environment, and fluids become depleted.

Herbal remedies can help treat milder cases of heat stress If symptoms of heat strok occur seek immediate medical attention.

Beneficial herbs are, Bitter orange it helps maintain electrolyle balance. Use as loose tea 1 tsp. per cup, use 1 to 2 cups per day.

Cayenne.. relieves headache and fever, induces gustatory sweating. Dissolve 1/2 tsp. in a cup of boiling hot water. Take 1 tbsp. of the mixture with a cup of hot water and sip slowly.
