Khella

( Ammi visnaga )  Khella is the member of the Parsley family.

Common names are, bishop’s weed fruit, ammi visnaga.

Khella is a bitter yet aromatic member of  the same plant as carrots and parsley family. It grows erect to a height of 3 feet, and bears a wispy leaves with clusters of small white flowers. In the late summer it produces tiny fruits, which are picked before they have ripened for use in herbal preparations. Native to North Africa, khella appeared in Egyptian medicine as far back as 4000 years ago to treat kidney stones.

Khella combats spasms in the smooth muscles that line the walls of blood vessels, bronchial airways, and other tubs and ducts, making it useful in treating angina, asthma, atherosclerosis, and kidney stones. It also improves the circulation in the heart muscle and gives a mild boost to the heart’s pumping action.

Aids with: asthma, kidney stones, angina, atherosclerosis, and vitiligo.

Khella is available in tablets and tinctures, and can be used as a tea.

Cautions on using Khella because, the long term use of khella can bring on queasiness, dizziness, loss of appetite, headache, and sleep disorders. Regular ingestion of high dosages ( 100 milligrams or more ) can lead to liver problems. Because khella contains natural blood thinning agents, using this herb with prescription blood thinning medications may create a unacceptable risk of bleeding. In treating for vitiligo, absorption of khella dramatically increases the cream is left in contact with the skin for more than 30 minutes, it contains a number of compounds that may make the skin sensitive to ultraviolet light. You should avoid tanning lamps and use a sunblock when outdoors.
