Herb of the Day: Oats


( Avena sativa )

Available over the counter as raw rolled oats, oat straw, oat bran, and as a tincture.

Oats are a proven a nutritional value, also alleviate such ailments as depression, nervous anxiety, high cholesterol, insomnia, and indigestion. Oats can improve the overall condition of the nerves, relieve general feelings of weakness and fatigue, with their vitamins, minerals, and alkaloids providing both relaxing and stimulating effects. When applied externally they can relieve discomfort from poison ivy, hives, shingles, dry skin, allergic reactions and similar skin conditions.

Uses at home  as a tea: For nerves,

pour 1 cup boiling water over 2 or 3 tsp. dried oat straw, steep covered for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink 3 times a day.

As a tincture drink 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. 3 times a day.

Bath for hives: place up to 1 cup raw rolled oats directly into bath water.

For neuralgia or skin problems, put 1 to 3 cups into a muslin bag, place in bath water.

There are some side effects not serious, very large doses can cause headaches.
