Today the word, dessert, implies something that is sweet. Centuries ago, people had nothing against topping off a good meal with sweets.I myself have been guilty of such a habit, but dessert was also meant to soothe the stomach and prevent indigestion system. Scientific studies suggest that the papaya and peppermint and yogurt may help the gastrointestinal tract and possibly ward off indigestion. The yogurt may help combat the bacteria often responsible for infectious ( traveler’s diarrhea.
Indigestion Soothing Dessert
2 to 4 tsp. powered peppermint leaves and flower tops
4 to 8 Tbsp. plain yogurt
1 ripe papaya
Cut the papaya in half. Remove the seeds. Stir almost all the peppermint into the yogurt.
Fill each papaya half with the mixture. Sprinkle with remaining peppermint.
You can also substitute other stomach soothing herbs, by using ginger or cinnamon.
To choose a ripe papaya is easy by pressing the fruit gently, it should feel soft, but not mushy to the touch, like a ripe peach. The skin should be smooth and somewhat yellow.
