Snow Fungus

Other names are, white tree ear, silver tree ear fungus, white jelly leaf, white muer, wood ear fungus, bai mu erh, shirokikurage.

Snow fungus is a white translucent, fungus that grows on a wide variety of trees in Asia and in warmer climates worldwide. The fungus gets its common name of wood ear for the way it looks on the decaying logs on which it grows. The good quality snow fungus has a pale yellowish white color and a mucilagelike texture. The Japanese and Chinese herbalists have use snow fungus for more than 2,000 years. They used it primarily to increase body fluids,dry coughs, tonic herb, beauty enhancer, and palpitations. Laboratory test demonstrate that the extracts of snow fungus kills cervical cancer cells, as well those taken from other types of tumors. It is also known to sensitize the cervix and the uterus to radiation treatment, making that treatment more effective. The valuable medical uses of snow fungus is to prevent leukopenia, or low white blood cell counts, in people undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer.
