Herb of the Day: Wu Mel

Wu Mel is a deciduous tree that grows 30 ft. It Has pointed oval to elliptical leaves and white flowers with yellow fruit. It is a native to China and grows wild where it is planted in the southern and eastern provinces. The fruit is picked in the late summer.

Contains: fruit acids, sugars, vitamin C, plant sterols.

The sour tasting astringent is used in Chinese medicine to stop bleeding, counter diarrhea, dysentery, to ease coughs. It may also expel hookworms. Externally a plaster of the fruit is applied to the sites of removed corns, warts to speed healing and the formation of new skin. Research undertaken in China indicates that Wu Mel fruit has antibiotic properties.
