Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)

Valerian is a very strong nervine, meaning that is beneficial to relax the nervous system. It contains various oils and alkaloids that help with problems like insomnia and hypertension. It can be used as a tranquilizer, without the usual side effect of being drained. It is considered to be a safe, non-narcotic herbal sedative, but protracted use could lead to dependence.
It has pain relieving properties and can also be used to treat muscle spasms. This herb is recommended for short term use, and if you are not sure about how to use it properly, then consult a professional. Do not use if pregnant and is also not recommended for small children.
