Celery seed (or ajwan) grows all year round in India. Traditional Ayurvedic practitioners prescribe celery seed to reduce high vatha states,ingestion,nervous stomach,ungrounded emotions. In aromatherapy,celery seed oil can be used to counteract jet lag and exposure to smog,toxic environments. Celery seed is a strong diuretic,so you will want to drink extra water when taking this herb.
How to use it: Celery seed reduces kapha and vatha, and increases pitta. It is most commonly used as a diuretic,since fluid retention aggravates high blood pressure,congestive heart conditions,premenstrual syndrome,arthritis,and gout.
Celery seed has a pungent,salty qualities and a healing,moisturizing effect. It is used as a stimulate,expectorant,antispasmodic,lithotrophic( dispels stones).
It also contains phthalides,which has a sedative effect and can ease insomnia.
It treats common cold,sinus,coughs,congestion,respiratory,infections,bronchitis,laryngitis,arthritis,digestive problems,high blood pressure,insomnia,disases of the liver,slpeen,irregular menstruation.
Celery seed may cause minor discomfort to some people like stomach upset,diarrhea.if experimenting this discontinue use. Pregnant women should not take celery seed with out asking a doctor.Do not give to children under 2 years of age.
How to use: For mildly diuretic infusion crush 1 1/2 tsp. of celery seed.Add 1 cup boiling water. Cover let steep for 15 to 20 minutes. You may drink up to 3 cups a day.
