Self- Heal is a creeping perennial that grows to 20 inches tall. It has pointed oval leaves and violet blue or pink flowers.It is a native to Europe,Asia,it can be found in temperate regions worldwide. It is a way side plant that grows in meadows by roadsides and thrives in sunny areas. Rarely cultivated self-heal can easily be grown from seed or by root division. The aerial parts are picked in the summer when it is in flower.
Self- Heal as indicated by it’s name has been used for centuries to staunch bleeding and heal wounds. Jhon Gerared, a 16th century herbalist, “wrote, there is not a better wounde herb in the world than that of selfe-heale,”
Self- Heal,is a undervalued astringent,wound healer with tonic activity.It has powerful antioxidant and tissue protective activity making it potentially of value in many chronic illnesses. Its antioxidant,astringent activity makes it beneficial in treating sore throats,inflammatory bowel disease,diarrhea and to heal bleeding internally. Used externally as a lotion can be applied to treat leucrrhea ( vaginal discharge), In Chinese medicine it is taken with ju hua, for fevers,headaches,dizziness,vertigo. It is thought to cool liver fire.
Reachers in China indicates that the herb may lower high blood pressure,and be a moderately effective against a broad range of bacteria.
