Herb of the Day: Eyebright

Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis)

Parts used: The aerial parts

Eyebright helps to relieve inflammation and tighten mucus membranes. It also is the most recommended herb for the treatment of conjunctivitis (pink eye) and blepharitis. Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelash follicles, along the edge of the eyelid due to a bacteria. It is often used for infections, allergic reactions and upper respiratory infections. It also supports the liver and helps to cleanse the blood of toxins.
Traditionally, it has been used for the treatment of eye problems, eye inflammation, ulcers and some people have used it for eye strain. Eye bright will strengthen all parts of the eye and provide elasticity to the nerves and optic devices responsible for sight.
Personal note: My son suffers from hay fever and when it gets out of control he usually ends up with allergic conjunctivitis (pink eye). When this happens, he will make eyebright-nettle tea and use an eye cup 3-4 times a day which usually clears the problem up fairly quickly.
