Herb of the Day: Horehound

Horehound (Marrubium vulgare)
Parts used: Flowers, leaves, root

For children’s coughs, croups and colds, horehound is unequaled. It has enormous expectorant properties and aids in loosening phlegm from the chest. Horehound aids also in healing wounds and stimulates the digestive tract. Warm horehound tea will relieve hyperemic conditions and congestion of the lungs by promoting the flow of blood. Taken in large doses, horehound is a laxative.
Some herbalists and homeopathic doctors recommend horehound for herpes simplex, eruptions, eczema and shingles by applying the herb topically in a compress
