Buchu (Barosma betulina)
Buchu is a traditional South African remedy, taken as a stimulant, diuretic and greatly aids the digestion. This is one of the best herbs for urinary tract issues. It absorbs excessive uric acid and reduces bladder inflammation. Buchu is also a good herb for the mucous membranes in that it acts as an astringent and disinfectant.
When combined with other herbs, like Uva Ursi, it can be used as a treatment for water retention and urinary tract infections. When taken as a tea, it has been known to help with enlarged prostate and irritation in the membrane of the urethra.
Buchu has a very strong flavor that some people have described as a cross between rosemary and peppermint.
